Description

Advertising for the Big Western Shipping Company, circa 1932. Hit hard by the Depression, the company would eventually liquidate most of it's airship operations in the face of high operating costs and the early crumpling of several of the company's insurers. The unpredictable dust storms during the Dirty Thirties would also hamper the previously reliable flight schedules, causing several publicized incidents, two of which were the crashing and explosion of the Big Western's current (and newest) flagship cargo carrier.

What little was left of the company in 1939 was bought up and phased out by the United States Postal Services, the government deeming only one of the remaining four Big Western rigid airships safe for flight. After World War II, a different iteration of Big Western would be founded, operating a small fleet of rigid airships for specialized overland cargo. By 1950, most of the renewed company's overland deliveries would be carried out by truck, rail, or heavy plane. The very few big airships the company still had were all scrapped by 1972, even though the Big Western had been bombarded with letters requesting that at least one of the beautiful aircraft be preserved...
